Whales, Reptiles, and Pasta! - Blog Assignment #7

One of the best parts about being in Ulsan is definitely it's location. Today we were scheduled to go on a whale watching cruise and see the Ulsan Whale Museum. Unfortunately, due to a complication, we were unable to go on the cruise. While this was devastating to me and my fellow classmates, as we desperately wanted to be part of the 10% that actually see a whale, I did not let this ruin my day. The museum consisted of two separate buildings, one being the whale museum and the other being a whale ecology experience hall. Because there was a dolphin show and other animals to interact with, I spent most of my time in the ecology experience hall. I am always amazed by the intelligence of dolphins and how they work with the trainers. With the assistance of some tasty fish rewards, the trainers had the dolphins put on a nice show, full of waving, flipping, and water splashing. Thankfully, I didn't get too wet during the performance!

Afterwards, I went upstairs with some other UIP members and we had some fun with a few reptiles. The reptile handler was amazing and allowed us to pet and hold a few of the creatures!

Afterwards, we had a nice lunch at a local restaurant nearby. Because the menu had to be pre-arranged to accommodate all of us, we had bibimbap (비빔밥), a rice dish consisting of warm rice, sauteed and seasoned vegetables, and gochujang (고추장). While bibimbap is delicious and appreciated, I have really enjoyed other dishes, that were not mass produced for our group, from restaurants near the university. One of my favorite places is a restaurant called Seoga & Cook. Here they had a variety of pastas, rice pilafs, and menu sets to choose from.

It's going to be a sad realization when I get back to the United States and have a craving for some of that food. I suppose it will just be another reason that I need to come back to South Korea.

** Due to the lack of internet access during my departure from Ulsan, I was not able to post this assignment until today. My apologies! **

  1. I'm sad that the staff at the museum didn't offer to let me hold the reptiles.. I love snakes! I like the location of Ulsan, too. There are a lot of good places to eat and some nice places to shop right next to the university, and even more to do downtown. I think they have nice museums as well. It's too bad that we didn't get to go on the cruise, but I guess we probably wouldn't have seen a whale anyway.
